N.J. Democrats’ voter registration edge keeps dropping in the Biden Era

New Jersey Republicans are continuing to chip away at their Democrat rivals massive statewide voter registration edge.

According to data made available by the New Jersey Division of Elections, the GOP gained 1,209 voters in January 2023. Meanwhile, the Democrats lost 1,316. That’s a net gain of 2,525 for Republicans.

Overall, the Democrats’ statewide advantage (1,002,195) remains massive, but it’s down approximately 7% since Joe Biden took office in January 2021 when it stood at nearly 1.08 million; that’s a reversal from the Trump/Post-Christie years when Democrat gains piled up. The state still has 1,002,195 more Democrats than Republicans, but that number has dropped by 7% since Joe Biden won the presidency and Democrats had a 1,079,09-voter edge.

Getting below the symbolic 1 million mark in the month of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday (February) would be a small but nevertheless delicious victory for state Republicans who’ve enjoyed more than a few significant down-ballot victories in recent cycles at the local, county, and legislative levels notwithstanding continued Democrat dominance in state-wide contests.

It’s also a positive sign for Republicans heading into 2023 when the entire legislature is on the ballot for the first time post-redistricting.
