SOME MO? GOP gained in key districts, cut Dems’ statewide voter margin by another 2.5k+ in July

In another promising sign for New Jersey Republicans, the GOP cut its statewide registration gap with Democrats by another 2,559 voters in July 2023. Republicans gained a net of 1,065 voters last month while Democrats lost 1,495. The Dems’ still enjoy a large statewide edge (989,944), but it’s dropped steadly over the last couple of years and Democrats no longer boast a symbolic one million voter advantage.

More significantly in the near term, Republicans appear to be picking up steam in key battleground districts ahead of the upcoming legislative elections when every Senate and Assembly seat is on the ballot.

For example, Republicans gained a net of 91 registrants in LD4 (Gloucester, Camden, Atlantic) while Democrats lost 77 voters. LD4 hosts a rare open Senate seat following the retirement announcement of Fred Madden; the district also grew redder in redistricting, boosting Republican hopes for a party flip in November.

Both parties lost ground in Atlantic County’s LD2, a key GOP defense, but the Republicans closed the gap with Democrats by 20 voters having lost fewer registrants.
