You’re not surprised, are you?
Both of New Jersey’s U.S. Senators helped Democrats defeat a GOP bill defending female sports on Monday night.
The vote was 51-45, insufficient to overcome a Democrat filibuster. Both Cory Booker and Andy Kim joined the entirety of their caucus in opposing the legislation: H.R.28, the “Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2025.”
The Republican proposal would’ve promulgated that “sex shall be recognized based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth” when determining compliance with federal Title IX in the athletic arena.
“Through an amendment to Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, this bill would expressly recognize what is already federal law—that it is an illegal act of discrimination for a man to participate in a federally funded athletic program or activity designated for women or girls,” explained the sponsor, Senator Tommy Tuberville, in a statement.
“This bill also recognizes that ‘sex,’ as used in the statutory scheme, is based solely on reproductive biology and genetics,” added Tuberville. “Men participating in women’s sports not only is demeaning and dangerous to women and girls, but it erodes the integrity of our Nation’s civil rights laws. Congress’s affirmative vote on this bill would complement both federal court rulings and President Trump’s February 5, 2025, Executive Order, ‘Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports.'”
Others were even more blunt with their displeasure.
“The Democrats war on women continues,” opined Riley Gaines on X.
