UPDATE: Van Drew will introduce federal legislation targeting N.J. newborn sexual orientation questionnaires

Congressman Jeff Van Drew (R, NJ-02) is weighing in on the mandate requiring New Jersey hospitals to inquire as to the sexual orientation and gender identity of newborn, a story first reported by Save Jersey.

“This mandate is beyond outrageous,” said Van Drew in a statement released Friday. “We are talking about newborns who are just minutes old, and already, the state government is trying to push its radical narrative on them. Parents should be focused on bonding with their newborn, not filling out completely unnecessary forms about their baby’s gender and sexual orientation. I remember when my children were born, what a beautiful time it was being by my wife’s side, and if they had handed me this form, I would have laughed in their faces. It is inappropriate and wrong on every level.”

Save Jersey reported on the practice this week after State Senator Holly Schepisi (R-39) obtained a form recently utilized at a South Jersey hospital system. Since then, parents have come forward to confirm being given similar surveys at facilities across the state.

The offending legislation A-4385 – was signed into law byGovernor Phil Murphy in June 2022

“Instead of focusing on real issues, like improving healthcare or supporting struggling families, New Jersey is wasting time and resources on a policy that makes no sense,” added the South Jersey Republican.”I will be introducing legislation to make sure that states that allow policies like this will face consequences. We need to get back to common sense. Let parents raise their children without the state inserting itself into every part of their lives. This has gone too far.”
