It’s not every day that PJM, the regional transmission organization (RTO), wades (sort of) into state politics.
Well, they sort of did last week when Jeff Shields – senior manager of external communications for PJM – penned an op-ed for NJ Spotlight News calling out his organization’s Democrat critics in all but name:
“PJM has been very clear about our concerns with these supply and demand conditions. We work with politicians on both sides of the aisle; we are apolitical by definition. Attempting to place blame on a federally regulated, profit-neutral grid operator whose primary mission is to keep the lights on may win political points with some. But those who call New Jersey home deserve better.”

For context, back in March, Save Jersey was first to report on an Assembly Democrat internal memorandum advising members (all of whom are on the ballot this year) to blame everyone except themselves for upcoming electricity bill hikes ranging from 17% to 20%. PJM was on the list of Democrat targets for appropriate finger-pointing.
The relevant portion of the memo – in which Democrats accused PJM of “massive conflicts of interest,” foot-dragging, and misplaced priorities among other offenses – is posted below:
