Kean breaks silence, thanks supporters for patience amid medical hiatus

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tom Kean Jr. issues his first statement on Monday after missing weeks of work on Capitol Hill to recover from an unspecified medical condition.

“I want to thank my constituents and colleagues for their patience as I address a personal medical issue,” Kean (R, NJ-07) said in a statement released via social media. “My doctors continue to assure me that my recovery will be complete and that I will be back to the job I love very soon. I expect to return to a full schedule and be at 100 percent.”

The Congressman did not disclose the nature of his condition.

The long-time Garden State legislator’s unexplained absence garnered intensive media scrutiny in recent days, an egregious double standard given reporters’ usual disinterest when Democrat medical episodes are at issue.

Kean is running for a third term in New Jersey’s arguably only competitive House district in 2026. Located in North-Central Jersey, the 7th went narrowly for Mikie Sherrill last year but was carried by Donald Trump (also narrowly) in 2024. Kean was reelected by 5 points that same year.
