RESULTS: Bennett will challenge Kean in Battleground NJ-07

WESTFIELD, N.J. – The stage is set for New Jersey’s most competitive Midterm 2026 contest.

Rebecca Bennett, a former Navy helicopter pilot and healthcare executive, won the Democratic nomination in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District on Tuesday night by a solid margin and will challenge incumbent Republican Congressman Tom Kean Jr. in November.

While Bennett highlighted her military service, professional background, and vague “affordability” themes during the primary season, critics note that she is running as part of a national Democratic effort to flip one of the country’s most competitive House districts. Her campaign has emphasized opposition to President Trump’s agenda and support for repealing portions of the 2017 tax cuts, positions that may be a tougher sell in a district that narrowly backed Trump in 2024 and benefits mightly from a relaxed SALT cap.

Bennett entered the race with substantial institutional support, significant fundraising advantages, and endorsements from several county Democratic organizations, making her the clear if not inevitable favorite throughout the primary.

By contrast, Kean remains a well-known political figure in New Jersey. The son of former Governor Thomas Kean, he first won the seat in 2022 and was reelected in 2024. Despite concerns surrounding his recent medical leave, Kean has maintained strong fundraising and continues to hold the advantages of incumbency in a district Republicans view as critical to retaining their House majority. President Trump also re-upped his past endorsement of Kean on Election Eve.

“Tom Kean has my Complete and Total Endorsement for Re-Election,” Trump opined on his Truth Social platform, promising that Kean “WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!”

Supporters of Kean argue that Bennett’s campaign is built more on biography than on a demonstrated record of public service or notable private sector success. They also contend that her policy positions align closely with the increasingly radicalized national Democratic Party at a time when many NJ-7 voters have trended toward Republicans in federal elections.

The November contest is expected to be among the most competitive and expensive congressional fights in the nation this November, with Democrats viewing Bennett as a potential pickup opportunity and Republicans betting that Kean’s name recognition, history of steady service, and the district’s recent voting history will be enough to secure another term.
