Congressman Jeff Van Drew’s Subcommittee on Oversight will conduct a hearing on the New Jersey voter registration and fraud scandal on Tuesday, September 15th at 2:00 p.m.
New Jersey’s voter-registration scandal erupted after the Sherrill administration acknowledged that approximately 6,600 people who explicitly identified themselves as non-U.S. citizens at the Motor Vehicle Commission were nevertheless registered to vote between June 2023 and June 2024, apparently because of a failure in the state’s automatic “motor voter” system; officials initially acknowledged that hundreds of those registrants subsequently cast ballots.
The controversy is especially significant because New Jersey adopted automatic MVC voter registration in 2018 and expanded driver’s-license eligibility to undocumented immigrants in 2019, while separate cases of alleged noncitizen voting have surfaced outside the acknowledged software-glitch period.
Republicans have demanded a broader audit, citizenship verification and disclosure of where the questionable ballots were cast, while the Sherrill administration has resisted federal demands for voter records on privacy grounds—leaving unanswered questions about how long the problem existed, how extensive it really was, and whether any close elections were affected.
