TRENTON, N.J. — New Jersey parents struggling with the high cost of childcare could get some relief at tax time under new legislation introduced Thursday by Assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia (R-24).
Fantasia’s bill, A5514, would allow New Jersey taxpayers to claim a gross income tax deduction for employment-related childcare expenses.
The measure was formally introduced on September 17th and referred to the Assembly Children, Families and Food Security Committee.
The proposal comes as childcare remains a major expense for working families, particularly households with young children where both parents are in the workforce. Unlike the federal tax code, New Jersey’s gross income tax permits only deductions specifically authorized by state law.
Fantasia, who represents portions of Morris, Sussex and Warren counties, is the bill’s primary sponsor.
The legislation will now await consideration by the Democrat-controlled committee before it can advance to the full Assembly.
