CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE, N.J. – Zack Mullock apparently has a very loose definition of the word “friend.”
The Democrat challenging Congressman Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ-02) is getting absolutely torched by the father of an injured Cape May County police officer after claiming during last Thursday’s congressional debate that he was friends with the man’s son.
There’s just one problem. According to the victim’s father, Mullock has never even met him.
“Mullock claimed in his debate to not only know him but said they were friends. They’ve never even met,” Tony Kapurelos, father of Middle Township Officer Austin Kapurelos, wrote in a blistering Facebook post. “He wouldn’t know him if he tripped over him.”
Patrolman Kapurelos was severely injured while on duty on October 16th, shortly before the debate at Stockton University. An alleged drunk driver struck him during a traffic stop on Route 47 South; the recently-married officer is now recovering from broken bones and impact-induced lung damage. Congressman Van Drew later confirmed that the driver is an illegal alien.
“Absolute liar and should be ashamed of himself for using my son for political gain,” Kapurelos added, insisting that the contrast between the candidates couldn’t be clearer.
“Jeff Van Drew actually knows Austin and cares about him,” he explained. “That’s why Jeff looked so upset and shocked. Jeff routinely is at my store and has spent time with Austin. The liberal left and Mayor Mullock are a disgrace and should keep our family out of their mouth.”
Mullock is attempting to unseat Van Drew, a multi-term congressman who famously left the Democrat Party in 2019 over his objections to the first impeachment of President Donald Trump.
New Jersey is a sanctuary state. Back in March, Governor Mikie Sherrill – a strong Mullock supporter – signed legislation codifying prohibitions on cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. An Atlantic County judge attempted to release the accused drunk driver who struck Kapurelos on Monday, but the county prosecutor was granted a stay while he appeals the ruling.
