TOMS RIVER, N.J. — Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ04) has won another historic term in the U.S. House of Representatives, defeating Democratic challenger Rachel Peace in Tuesday’s general election.
Smith, 73, first took office in January 1981 and is now headed for his 24th consecutive term representing portions of Central Jersey.
The veteran Republican represents New Jersey’s 4th Congressional District, which includes portions of Monmouth and Ocean counties. His seat was widely considered safely Republican heading into Election Day.
Smith, one of the longest-serving members of Congress, has built a national reputation for his advocacy on human rights, religious liberty, veterans’ issues and opposition to abortion.
His latest victory extends a congressional career spanning more than four decades and keeps NJ-04 firmly in Republican hands for another two years.
