Lautenberg Will Follow GaGa Until She Loves Him

Despite banning political speech at her own concerts, Lady GaGa has found her voice for an issue. The Lady hosted an event in support of the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. As I am sure you already know, the repeal failed. It was a bipartisan failure by the way, two Democrat Senators voted it down as well. However, I don’t think that Lady GaGa should be so quick to judge.

You see, the DADT repeal was not an up or down vote on the issue. The language in the bill, as explained by GaGa herself, would only repeal the policy after a Pentagon review, and the signature of the President. I honestly do not think that every Republican in the Senate would be against such a measure if the Pentagon determined that it would be good for the military. The problem in this case was that Senator Reid decided to play political games, rather than attempt to make real change on an issue that he claims to hold dear.

The DADT provision was part and parcel to a defense bill that was important enough to stand on its own, but that’s not all. This bill also included the so-called DREAM Act. A piece of legislation that would, among other dumb ideas, offer illegal immigrants in-state tuition rates, create a path to amnesty for illegal immigrants already here without making them leave and come in through the front door, and also (what I actually consider the only decent idea) allow a faster path to citizenship after a predetermined period of military service to this country. Senator Reid knew that by sticking both DADT and DREAM in a defense spending bill, he would be able to not only rally a key constituency of the Democrat party, but also a constituency they hope to snag in these midterm elections. He put up a bill that he knew would fail and be a lightening rod for controversy so that he could pin a “bigot” label on the Senate Republicans.

Over the past few days, the pop star has been tweeting to different Senators, thanking them for their support or bashing them for their opposition to DADT. She even took the time to let her million+ followers know what a filibuster is (sort of).

Sadly, Save Jerseyans, it seems that Senator Lautenberg and Lady GaGa find themselves in somewhat of a Bad Romance (sorry I couldn’t help myself). While Senator Lautenberg is well known to be a GaGa fan, he received no twitter love today from the singer. Alas, his post to Lady GaGa went unreplied, even as he offered his unwavering support.

Instead of bashing Republicans for joining with Democrats to quash a bill that can only be described as a political tool that was never actually intended to pass, Lady GaGa should refocus her efforts and lobby Senator Reid to sever the bills, giving the defense bill, DADT, and DREAM individual time for discussion, debate, and finally, a vote. She better act fast, though. Senator Reid only has 41 days left to drive any sort of agenda…

  1. What a disgrace that our country still has this bigoted policy that has fired thousands of capable men and women who risk their lives to fight for it.

Who gives a crap about Lady Gaga. Its extremely disturbing that you write an entire article about her and yet make no mention of Servicemen like Mike Almy who were fired under this BS law.

If the Republicans are stuck with the bigot label, they only have themselves to blame. A Pentagon review was not need to desegregate the the blacks and the whites in 1948. Yesterdays vote was a disgusting reminder of how far behind we still are as a country.
