Christie Approval Rating: 51%

A Fairleigh Dickinson University poll released today shows that 51% of New Jerseyans approve of the way that Governor Christie has performed in his job thus far. I cannot help but noting that this beats out President Obama both in New Jersey and nationwide. 37% disapprove of Christie’s job performance (add up the NJEA and liberal democrats and you’ll have your 37%). Voters who come from households headed by public employees generally disapprove by a margin of 56% – 37%, while voters from all other households approve 55% – 32%.

60% of respondents indicated that they believe the state should solve budget problems by cutting spending and reducing programs. The remaining 40% think that New Jersey needs higher taxes. I don’t really know what to say to those people, frankly I am shocked that the number is that high.

According to Peter Woolley, the poll director,

These are strong numbers for a politician who is cutting deeply into the public budget, is the target of many interest groups, and contends with a legislature controlled by the other party . . . No wonder candidates in other states want him to campaign for them.

This poll also offered evidence that voters generally feel that Governor Christie is putting New Jersey on the right track. While 48% still believe NJ is on the wrong track under this Governor, that number is down from 68% just one year ago. Clearly Governor Christie needs to keep doing what he is going.
