The Number of the Day is 47

47 percent to be precise. Its a very important number on this tax filing day.

It turns out that in 2010 roughly 47 percent of Americans who did earn income will not be paying one penny in property taxes this year. This really should not be news to shocking to anyone though. Statistics like this have been freely thrown around every year during tax time, and while it fluctuates from year to year, it always seems to work out that more than 40 percent of tax payers are not actually tax payers at all.

Chart from MarketWatch

What makes it so interesting today is that the latest Pew poll on Obama’s approval rating shows him coming in with 47 percent approval!  While I am sure that not every income-earning-non-taxpaying American is supporting Obama at this point (lets be honest, the poll’s approval rating has to account for White House staff and their families right?), it is interesting to think about.

Why wouldn’t the group of Americans who will not be affected by the coming crushing tax policies of this administration be their biggest cheerleaders? If there is any real correlation between these numbers, then a flatter, fairer tax rate would result in more people paying (but paying less!) and lower approvals for Obama. Someone tell the House GOP to get on to income tax reform before 2012!
