UPDATE x2: Obama’s Tired Speech vs. Perry’s Debate Debut, Who Wins?

President Obama may be the most partisan, petty President we have ever had. I understand it to an extent. He has gone through most of his life without anyone really not liking him. He’s always been that popular, well-spoken charmer that gives a great first impression and leaves people wanting more. The only problem with that is people can only “want” for so long before they start to wonder where the product is. Four years is too long to coast on nothing but your oratory skills.

Well now is he going to put those skills to the test yet again. Trying to buy some more time as his poll number continue sinking into the political oblivion. Somewhere in that head of his, President Obama thinks that maybe, just maybe, one more speech will gain him the hearts and minds of the American people once more, and allow him to sail another 14 months on that alone. Unfortunately for the President, the people want jobs, not words.

But wait! Thats the thing! This speech is about jobs! It is exactly what we want to hear, right? Wrong. It’s going to be the same tired lines over and over about “winning the future” and “change not happening in a day” and “its not my fault that earthquakes in Japan and Hurricane’s in New Jersey caused the recession.”

So if this is more of the same, why am I even writing about it? Why bother to comment on some tired old speech that isn’t work the teleprompter its projected on? Because this one is actually a little different. The President and his political advisors have sunk to a new low. Now only did they force the American people to wait through the President’s vacation to hear his grand plan on job creation, which better be damn good after three years of waiting through less important issues and initiative this President saw as imperative, but now they are going to give the speech on national television at the exact same time as the Republican Primary Debate. It would not be such a big deal if the President were popular, or even if he had anything meaningful to say. But let’s be honest. President Obama’s speech is going to preempt an informative debate between a pool of candidates from which our next President is going to be chosen.

Not only that, but this debate is also the debut of the biggest name to shake up the race since, well, anyone. Rick Perry and Mitt Romney are going to be standing next to each other on that state and trading punches all night, because at this point the are the only two viable candidates in the room.

The debate on September 7th is on NBC. There has been no official word yet on how scheduling will be handled, but I cannot imagine that NBC News is not going to be covering a Presidential address to a joint session of Congress. But for a second lets just assume that since NBC has to expend vast sums of money to hold and sponsor these debates, that they refuse to cut to Washington at 9:00PM. Who would win the ratings game? I mean, we would have to control for the fact that President Obama would be shown on ten times the amount of channels, but once that is figure out, I would be willing to bed the numbers would be quite close. Americans everywhere are tired of the rhetoric and platitudes coming from the empty suit in the oval office. They want new ideas, they want an alternative, and on NBC there would be a row of ten or more alternatives right in front of them.

UPDATE: Press Secretary Carney has reportedly “granted permission” to NBC and the candidates involved in the September 7th debate to move their debate so that is does not conflict with the President’s speech, which was requested months after the debate was scheduled.

I on the other hand, am giving the White House permission to try and reschedule the election to November 2011 so that we can get rid of this sort of arrogance and incompetence just a bit sooner.

UPDATE 2: Speaker John Boehner has sent a letter to the President asking that his Joint Session Speech be moved to September 8th. He does not mention the Republican Presidential Debate, but states that September 7th is the first day that the House will be in session, and that the first vote of that day will not be until 6:30PM. A roughly 3 hour security sweep takes place before receiving a President in the chamber, so the schedule is not exactly convenient for the Congress.

Boenher has invited President Obama to speak the next night instead. Below is a PDF of the letter. More to come…
