UPDATE: Thousands of New Jerseyans Still Underwater and Powerless After Hurricane Irene

Some New Jerseyans are carrying on today as if Hurricane Irene never happened. Congressional Democrats certainly are; they’re playing partisan games and refusing to approve much needed FEMA funds. President Obama seems equally unconcerned about the Garden State. His latest public statements have been restricted to the Irene-related crises in New England or, even more off topic, his lame recycled jobs “plan.”

Other individuals, however, and particularly those whom Governor Christie visited yesterday afternoon in storm-ravaged Passaic County communities, are still still living in a powerless, flooded, economic nightmare. And “powerless” is the operative word as businesses in Monmouth County and displaced citizens in a Somerset County VFW alike struggle to get their hands around this thing. It’s miserable to go three, four, five or more days with an empty fridge or a dark storefront! It’s expensive, too, at a time when the economy can least afford interruptions.

For whatever it is worth, the Governor of New Jersey can’t snap his fingers and reverse swollen rivers. But no one wants to hear that when they’re hurting. So Chris Christie is putting in some serious time and miles to make residents feel like their government is aware of their plight:
