Where Have You Gone, Margaret Thatcher?

This weekend’s news cycle focused on two American ladies with very little in common, although both women are commonly addressed by their fans on a first name basis:

Sarah Palin and Whitney Houston.

Sarah made headlines yesterday afternoon by riling up a Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) crowd. How? She said the acronym “WTF” (or “what the f$%#”) accurately described President Obama’s jobs plan, a gimmick which she first debuted after this year’s SOTU address. You can observe a similar reaction in high school sophomores!

Whitney, as you’ve no doubt heard by now, was found unresponsive last night in a California hotel room; she was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The music legend famously abused drugs and alcohol for much of her adult life, squandering a magnificent voice that many considered among the best to ever grace the music industry.

Twitter, Facebook, and other social media outlets were overflowing with messages of support for both women throughout Saturday afternoon into the evening.

And yet I can’t help but wonder, Save Jerseyans: where have all the Margaret Thatchers gone? The strong, classy, stoic yet unapologetically feminine role models of modern western civ who paved the way for subsequent generations of women in the public arena.

Are they still out there somewhere?

Or are we left to make due with the logical products of an increasingly coarse culture?
