@GovChristie: New SCONJ Nominees “Represent a Political Compromise on My Part”

Anticipating a partisan battle, Governor Christie laid out the political argument for his new Supreme Court nominees during this morning’s press conference.

Specifically how, in Christie’s opinion, Judge Bauman and President Hanna go beyond preserving “the partisan balance” on the state high court by depriving Republicans of a GOP seat (he’s long held that Justice LaVecchia is an indy despite having been appointed by Governor Whitman).

The SCONJ’s current composition is D+2, R+2 and Ind+1. Christie’s nominees, if confirmed, would give Republicans a one seat advantage (thereby conforming to the “tradition”).

I’ve never thought there was much utility in this unwritten tradition since the party labels mean little on this decidedly left-leaning court but hey, I’m also not a Trenton Democrat desperately trying to land a political punch!
