GENERAL WASHINGTON’S DARING CHRISTMAS CROSSING SAVED THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION IN ITS DARKEST HOUR
By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog
All too many modern Americans are unconcerned with safeguarding their core liberties, Save Jerseyans. Some seem willing to trade them in for a little short term safety and security at the first sign of trouble. Perhaps Ben Franklin knew more than he thought!
But 236 years ago tonight, Save Jerseyans, our American Revolution hung in the balance.
To rescue the nascent colonial cause, General George Washington and a scrappy band of patriot soldiers invaded a Hessian garrison just north of Trenton, New Jersey, while the German mercenaries recovered from their Christmas festivities (translation: “hangovers”). The ensuing Continental Army victory at the first “Battle of Trenton” was a genuine Christmas miracle for the young nation. We might not be here today without it.
Whether modern Americans are still worthy of Washington’s sacrifice is an oft-discussed topic here at Save Jersey. I know there are some brave young and women overseas this Christmas who are most definitely deserving. Whether YOU understand the responsibility inherited by all Americans from our founders is worth a moment of reflection every December the 25th.
