Legendary Philadelphia Eagle Garry Cobb made it abundantly clear that he was running to replace Rob Andrews back in February, Save Jerseyans, but the formal announcement was indefinitely on hold over the last couple of months, reportedly so that he could continue making sports-related media appearances via 610 WIP talk radio and other regional outlets without running afoul of FEC regulations.

All of that ends Monday. According to Save Jersey sources, Cobb will host a press conference at Camden County GOP headquarters in Cherry Hill at 10:30 a.m. on Monday in order to make it official.

A resident of Cherry Hill along with his wife Gwendolyn and three children, the man who South Jerseyans affectionately call “G Cobb” prospered for 11 years in the NFL as a linebacker with the Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Lions in addition to the Eagles. Despite winning two Rose bowls, Cobb actually received contract offers from the California Angels and Chicago Cubs during his college days at USC before ultimately settling on football in time for the 1979 draft.

Defense may win championships but elections are a different story. Cobb stands to face the full might of the South Jersey political offense after June in the person of presumptive Democrat nominee Donald Norcross.

He’s up against folks who are willing to do everything and anything to win.

The sitting state senator’s brother George E. Norcross III raised eyebrows earlier this month when he sent fundraising emails to employees of the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News, both owned by Norcross’s Interstate General Media group, a move which a spokesman for the notorious party boss claimed was accidental.
