Wyckoff Mayor Kevin Rooney is LD40’s new Assembly-elect.
He initially survived a three-on-one smackdown from all three LD40 GOP county chairmen on Tuesday night and finished first on ballot #1 in the committee contest to replace former Assemblyman Scott Rumana who left the legislature for a Superior Court judgeship.
Rooney (87 votes) placed narrowly ahead of Passaic County’s Mike Marotta (81 votes); outgoing Bergen Freeholder Maura DeNicola finished 3rd with 41 votes.
Rooney prevailed over Marotta, 104-96, in the ensuing second ballot run-off.
The Mayor’s win is an upset of sorts given the vocal opposition he faced from party leaders….
