HOPE AND CHANGE: Process to Repeal Obamacare is Officially Underway

Repealing and replacing Obamacare won’t be straightforward by design, Save Jerseyans, but the newly-constituted Republican Senate initiated the process on Wednesday.

It voted 51-48 to initiate debate on a budget resolution (known as the ‘repeal resolution’) which Republicans intended to utilize to dismantle the Affordable Care Act by way of an independent budget reconciliation bill. Another reason the procedural path forward is so circuitous? This strategy is an alternative to broad-based repeal legislation which, given the GOP’s slim 52-seat majority, would likely fall prey to a filibuster.

Rand Paul (R-KY) was the sole GOP “nay” vote.

Watch:

The next stage of the fight comes even as the budget debate phase gets underway: how to replace Obamacare and when.
