TRENTON, N.J. – Seizing upon the tragedy in Parkland, Florida, New Jersey Democrats plan to ram sweeping new gun control measures through the state legislature this week, marking a dramatic step further leftward for a state that already has among the strictest firearms regulations in the United States.
Their new push will begin this week.
The following bills are slated for Assembly Judiciary Committee consideration on Wednesday, February 28th at 11:00 a.m. in Room 11 of the State House Annex:
–
A2761 -> Restricts maximum capacity of all ammunition magazines to 10 rounds.
A2759 -> Criminalizes possession of “armor piercing ammunition”
A2758 -> “Codifies regulations defining justifiable need to carry handgun”
A2757 –> Mandating dealer background checks for all private gun sales in New Jersey
A1016 -> Creates commission to bring about so-called “smart guns” and requires gun retailers to sell them
A1217 -> “Gun violence restraining orders” without regard for due process rights
A1181 -> Provides for the seizure of firearms when a health “professional” believes a gun owner poses a risk

Governor Phil Murphy (D-N.J.) had repeatedly pledged to sign legislation into law, such as the 10-round magazine limit, which his Republican predecessor Chris Christie previously vetoed.
