Hugin urges Menendez-phobic N.J. Democrats to cross party lines

MOUNTAINSIDE, NJ — The fact that badly-damaged incumbent U.S. Senator Bob Menendez saw nearly 40% of his party desert him on Tuesday has state and national media buzzing.

The big question: will this protest vote stay home? Come home? Or maybe even consider crossing over to the Republican challenger’s camp?

Newly-minted GOP nominee Bob Hugin clearly hopes so.

“Last night’s results were a clear rejection of corrupt, career politician Bob Menendez,’ said Hugin Communications Director Megan Piwowar. “An unknown challenger with no money got nearly 40% of the Democratic vote and won six of the state’s 21 counties against a two-term incumbent.  That is unheard of. The bottom line: Tens of thousands of Democrats chose to support anyone but Bob Menendez. Our campaign extends a warm invitation to those voters to support Bob Hugin, who will be an independent voice for New Jersey and work across party lines to get things done for our state.”

Hugin will likely need support from Democrats and Independents to cross the finish line in November on top of robust GOP turnout; despite his weak showing relative to his unknown party rival, Menendez still earned better than 37,000 more than Hugin and his vanquished primary opponent, Brian Goldberg, combined.
