MUST READ: Monmouth U. pollster pans the N.J. Democrat redistricting scheme

We don’t regularly link to The Star-Ledger, Save Jerseyans, but a guest op-ed from Monmouth University pollster Patrick Murray is a must-read for anyone who cares about democracy in the Garden State. He discusses a fast-tracked proposal pushed by New Jersey Democrats which, if adopted by the voters, will make legislative districts less competitive in future elections through the constitutional amendment process:

_

“In the bill’s proposed changes (ACR60/SCR43), competitive is a relative term based on how a party has performed in prior elections. To put it simply, if the statewide electorate tends to prefer Democrats by 15 points, then an 8-point Democratic advantage in a given district could be considered ‘competitive.’ There’s a little more math to it than that, but you get the drift.”
