Atlantic County radio host Harry Hurley reported on Friday morning that Atlantic County Freeholder Frank Formica is leaving the 2nd Legislative District primary Assembly race.

The remaining declared candidates include fellow Atlantic County Freeholder John Risley, former Brigantine Mayor Phil Guenther, and Somers Point City Councilman and former NJ-02 Congressional primary candidate James Toto.

Later this month, thee Atlantic GOP will gather to nominate two of the three men for its official endorsement heading into the June primary.

Whoever emerges will square off against Democrat incumbent legislators Vince Mazzeo and John Armato in the fall.

N.J. Republicans consider LD2 — which is wholly contained inside of Atlantic County — to be one of the few districts where they stand a strong chance to pick up seats in 2019, potentially offsetting potential losses in heavily-targeted northern districts including LD21, LD25, and LD26. The LD2 GOP is currently represented in the State Senate by incumbent Chris Brown (who isn’t on the ballot this November).
