NRCC says Van Drew “should quit now” after awful fundraising numbers

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE, N.J. – Freshman Congress Jeff Van Drew (D, NJ-02) pulled in a pitiful $120,556 in the first quarter of 2019, less than 1/4 of neighboring freshman Democrat Andy Kim and a clear sign of trouble ahead for the former state senator occupying a Trump district.

The NRCC ribbed Van Drew on Tuesday, urging the Democrat to quit.

“Having to own the socialist policies House Democrats have embraced is bad enough, but Jeff Van Drew’s reelection efforts got that much harder after his abysmal fundraising total,” opined NRCC Spokesman Michael McAdams. “He should quit now and save himself the embarrassment.”

Van Drew, who won a surprisingly close single-digit contest in 2018, pulled down just four itemized donations from New Jersey residents in three month’s time through the end of March 2019.

He has only $80,099 cash-on-hand and a debt obligation of $28,537.

Donald Trump carried sprawling NJ-02 by a 50% to 46% margin in 2016. In response, Van Drew has routinely visited Fox News and taken steps to appear less Trump-antagonistic than most of his party’s House caucus. His attempt to be all things to all people, however, appears to be hurting Van Drew with the online liberal donor base crucial to driving fundraising numbers in the digital age.

He’s already drawn two likely 2020 opponents: well-heeled businessman David Richter and Van Drew’s 2018 rival Seth Grossman, an activist and attorney.
