‘American Dream’ mall finally opens. Sort of. And N.J. taxpayers invested over $1 billion.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – North Jersey politicians and Trenton elites led by Governor Phil Murphy are spending today and much of the weekend celebrating the soft opening of ‘American Dream,’ the decades-in-the-making Meadowlands mega mall.

It’s been a financial boondoggle since day #1. How expensive?

N.J. Advance Media crunched the numbers; the total taxpayer investment over the course of the project’s long history (spanning multiple gubernatorial administrations) easily eclipses $1 billion. But no one knows the exact number, and the total construction price tag is $5 billion.

Not all of the mall is open. Most of it is still closed.

The project dates back to 1991.
