Ed the Trucker boosts N.J. nuclear energy

State Senator Ed “The Trucker” Durr (R-3) and his LD3 team visited PSEG’s Salem nuclear facility on Wednesday.

“Today we went to PSEG Nuclear Facility in Salem County. The visit was very productive & we look forward to working with them to bring more jobs to NJ,” Durr tweeted from his account.

New Jersey taxpayers currently provide a $300 million annual subsidy to help keep three nuclear power reactors running at the energy company’s Salem and Hope Creek locations. Cumulatively, the three reactors account for approximately 90% of New Jersey’s “clean” (carbon-free) electricity.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, nuclear energy has “roughly supplied a fifth of America’s power each year since 1990.”

“[N]uclear energy has by far the highest capacity factor of any other energy source. This basically means nuclear power plants are producing maximum power more than 93% of the time during the year,” the department explains on its website. “That’s about 1.5 to 2 times more as natural gas and coal units, and 2.5 to 3.5 times more reliable than wind and solar plants.”

Governor Murphy’s current energy master plan (for which the official cost has yet to be disclosed) relies heavily on nuclear energy since the state’s growing investment in wind power clearly can’t compensate for the administration’s illogical plan to ditch relatively clean natural gas.
