Durr: SCOTUS is “on the verge of fixing a 50-year mistake”

State Senator Ed Durr (R-3) expressed optimism on Tuesday after the leask of a draft Supreme Court opinion which, if finalized, would overturn Roe v. Wade.

“As someone who believes in the sanctity of life, I am hopeful that Justice Alito’s draft decision proves to be the final opinion that is approved by the majority to overturn Roe v. Wade and reaffirm states’ rights when it comes to abortion,” said Durr. “While it’s possible things can change, it seems likely the Supreme Court is on the verge of fixing a 50-year mistake. It’ll be a major victory for the pro-life community and for all those who kept faith that change would one day come.”

New Jersey’s pro-life advocates will see only a partial victory.

Governor Murphy signed the “Freedom of Reproductive Choice Act” into law earlier this year which effectively codified Roe v. Wade into state law.

Another 18 U.S. states either have triggers in place to outlaw abortion upon the overturn of Roe v. Wade or laws banning abortion still on the books from the pre-Roe era that could be enforced if Roe goes down. Up to 23 states may enact some level of abortion ban in the wake of a decision along the lines of Justice Alito’s draft opinion.
