It’s chances of ever getting out of the Democrat-controlled Assembly State and Local Government Committee? Not great.
But Assemblyman Ronald Dancer (R-Ocean)’s A3441 is getting people talking all the same.
According to the bill’s statement, it would codify in law that “only individuals who are citizens of the United States are eligible to vote in elections held in the State, and specifically prohibits elected local government officers from voting or acting to approve any ordinance or resolution which would allow individuals who are not citizens of the United States to vote in elections of the local unit.”
15 U.S. municipalities currently permit non-citizens – including illegal aliens – to cast ballots in local elections: New York City, San Francisco, 11 other communities in Maryland and two towns in Vermont.
In 1996, the U.S. Congress explicitely prohibited non-citizens from voting in federal elections.
“Specifying in law that only citizens may vote serves to protect our state and local elections,” said Dancer in a statement.
The Garden State is home to hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens. Under Governor Murphy (who declared a “sanctuary state”), they’ve received access to driver’s licenses, free attorneys to fight deportation, and direct financial aid which may’ve violated state law.
