Party switch flips South Jersey town to GOP control

A former Democrat freeholder candidate has switched parties in Atlantic County’s Absecon, Save Jerseyans, tossing control of the city of 9,000+ residents to the GOP.

Republicans will enjoy a 4-3 majority when the city reorganizes this upcoming week according to WPG’s Harry Hurley.

At-Large Councilman Stephen Light, a member of the electricians’ union and a 2019 Democrat candidate for freeholder, is just the latest example of South Jersey trending towards the GOP over the last few years.

Atlantic County government continues to be under Republican control despite a county-wide Democrat registration advantage.

Congressman Jeff Van Drew who famously switched parties in December 2019 was reportedly influential in Light’s decision to leave the Democrats.
