It’s no longer up for debate: the pandemic lockdowns were a DISASTER for youth mental health. The only real difference in coverage is whether it’s a conservative outlet (where the lockdowns are appropriately blamed as the proximate cause) or a Leftist outlet (in which case the lockdowns are deemphasized and the pandemic generally is fingered, thereby eliminating any responsibility otherwise shouldered by government officials and their enablers).
Learning loss is arguably the least of it. A recent CDC analysis discovered that no less than 4 in 10 U.S. high school students felt sad or hopeless during 2021, and almost 1 in 4 contemplated suicide. There’s also emerging evidence of an uptick in abuse during the pandemic lockdowns. That shouldn’t surprise anyone! Fearmongering, economic dislocation and ever-changing guidance and rules turned many homes into emotional pressure cookers.
So what to do if you’re a Democrat governor who LED the lockdown movement? And need to find a way to mute the negative impact of your role in the lockdowns on your national prospects?
Enter Governors Phil Murphy and Gretchen Whitmer (of Michigan) who are spending most of their Wednesday afternoon hosting a series of NGA Zoom seminars on “mental health” including “ensuring access and affordability of quality treatment and care” for youngsters.
