N.J. mayor booted over opposition to raising the Pride Flag on city property

Perhaps this is why Republicans can’t have nice things?

Rochelle Park’s Republican mayor (Perrin Mosca) was removed in a 4-o township committee vote last week, Save Jerseyans, and while he’s still on committee and running for reelection in November, he’s out of the top job… at least for now.

The reason: he reportedly vocally opposed the raising of a “pride flag” at township hall.

The aforementioned 4-0 vote included three Republicans and the committee’s lone Democrat Linda Boniface, a symptom of an apparent schism in the township’s GOP leadership. Deputy Mayor Jennifer Appice is serving as acting mayor pending a committee vote to replace Mosca.

Mosca may be deposed but he’s not apologizing.

“My position is that private flags do not belong on public property,” Mosca explained according to the Daily Voice. “The only flags that represent the entire community of Rochelle Park are the American Flag, the NJ state flag, the County flag and our Township flag. All other flags will only create division and open up our township to a myriad of other issues. I am not the only one who believes this to be the best policy.”

It’s remarkable that any of that is remotely controversial, and it wouldn’t have been even 10 years ago, but welcome to America 2023… our priorities are screwed up, and perhaps hopelessly so. How hopeless the situation stands may be a question tested in Rochelle Park.
