Murphy admits: N.J. ratepayers “may be unable to absorb” offshore wind costs

The grift continues, Save Jerseyans.

This week, we learned that the Democrat governors of Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island formally went begging to the federal government with a letter to Joe Biden requesting $$$$$$$$$$ for offshore wind projects. Embedded in the letter is a massive admission which shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s been paying attention.

“Absent intervention, these near-term projects are increasingly at risk of failing,” Murphy and his colleagues wrote. “Without federal action, offshore wind deployment in the U.S. is at serious risk of stalling because states’ ratepayers may be unable to absorb these significant new costs alone.”

Of course, no one is saying “how much” is enough. New Jersey Democrats just gave Orsted, the foreign-owned wind developer seeking to put hundreds of turbines off of the state’s coast, not a dime less than $1 billion back in July. Orsted promptly issued warnings that it needed MORE public subsidies to make good on its own promises.

It’s not like no one saw it coming.

“Democrats like Governor Murphy who often complain about corporate welfare had absolutely no problem giving $1 billion to a foreign wind farm developer at the expense of New Jersey ratepayers,” complained state Senator Mike Testa Jr. (R-1) at the time. “Other wind farm developers are already lining up at the trough of big government begging for their own bailouts, which Governor Murphy is likely to give them.”

“For Ocean Wind I, I estimate that a typical residential customer will pay an additional $26 per year,” Dr. Jonathan Lesser explained in a July Save Jersey op-ed. “Of course, if Ørsted succeeds in renegotiating its existing contract, which will force New Jerseyans to pay $98 per megawatt-hour the first year Ocean Wind I generates electricity – rising to $148 per MWh in the contract’s final year – a typical residential customer will pay even more for the privilege of seeing dead whales and dolphins washing up on New Jersey beaches.  Plus, customers will pay for all of the backup electricity needed for the majority of hours in the year when the wind doesn’t blow.”

Testa was right. So was Lesser. What is it that they say about giving a mouse a cookie?
