Governor Ron DeSantis ended his 2024 presidential campaign on Sunday after a disappointing distant second place showing in the Iowa caucuses, a state in which his much criticized campaign had pinned most of its hopes.
“I can’t ask our supporters to volunteer their time, and donate their resources, if we don’t have a clear path to victory,” the Florida governor announced in a social media post.
DeSantis also offered an endorsement of Donald Trump, calling him “superior to Biden,” and took a swipe at rival Nikki Haley by arguing that we can’t “go back to the old Republican guard of yesteryear” represented by the former South Carolina governor.
DeSantis’s move is politically astute, Save Jerseyans. He’s going out of the 2024 contest having finished respectably in Iowa but without risking a likely third place drubbing in New Hampshire which would’ve furthered sullied his brand and endangered his political capital. He’ll be prominently featured at the national convention, and his future avenues for national office won’t be prematurely foreclosed.
