Top Democrat’s bill would mandate reflective material on N.J. Halloween costumes

This bill has been introduced in four prior legislative sessions, Save Jerseyans, but Teresa Ruiz is still trying to mandate reflective tape on your kids’ Halloween costumes.

S2510/A3136 was reintroduced last month and represents yet another Trenton attempt to insert itself in situations where intervention is overkill (at best).

“This bill requires children’s Halloween costumes sold at retail to have reflective material that is 1) attached to the costume, or 2) packaged with the costume to be subsequently attached by the buyer. Reflective material increases visibility in unsafe situations and helps to reduce the risk of consequential accidents due to low visibility or darkness,” the accompanying statement explains. “A person who sells a child’s Halloween costume without reflective material would pay a penalty of not more than $500 for the first offense and not more than $1,000 for each subsequent offense.”

What about kids whose parents make their costumes?

Won’t this mandate make costumes more expensive at a time when inflation is already kicking Americans’ asses on already expensive holidays?

And wouldn’t this rule ruin some cool costumes?

Trenton doesn’t care. Senator Ruiz and her Democrat Party have buckets full of solutions in search of problems.
