Kean visits Kyiv, embraces Zelenskyy

Tom Kean Jr. flew to Ukraine today for a photo opportunity with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy two days after the U.S. House’s passage of a billions of dollars in new foreign aid.

“I met with President Zelenskyy in Kyiv today to express the United States’ firm support for Ukraine,” Kean posted on X along with a video of the exchange. “Ukraine’s resistance to Russian aggression has inspired nations around the world. Ukrainians have proven their unbreakable spirit and fierce perseverance in defense of freedom.”

Ukraine’s share of the nearly $100 billion giveaway is approximately $48 billion; the vote was 311-112Ukraine’s total haul since the war began in 2022 has now reached $113 billion in both defense related aid and other forms of assistance.

Meanwhile, back in New Jersey, Congressman Kean is presently seeking his second term on Capitol Hill; the Democrats’ presumptive nominee, activist Sue Altman, complained on X that it took too long for the controversial aid package to pass and argued that “it is Democrats who got this bipartisan aid bill across the finish line” but did not tweet about Kean’s overseas jaunt.

Kean, a former state senator and son of Reagan-era Governor Thomas H. Kean, is one of two current New Jersey Republican congressmen (the other being Chris Smith) who voted for the Ukrainian aid appropriate. The third incumbent – Jeff Van Drew – opposed the package.
