VIDEO: Trump articulates a pro-federalism position on abortion for Election 2024

Abortion and “reproductive freedom” related issues may not rank high on the list of voter priorities in most public opinion polls, Save Jerseyans, but there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence that the end of Roe vs. Wade is continuing to help Democrats motivate their voters in key contests.

Sensing a need to reclaim the narrative, former President Donald Trump released a four-minute video on Monday articulating his abortion platform for the 2024 election.

If you were going to describe it with one word or phrase, it’d be “pro-federalism.”

“My view is […] the states will determine by legislation or vote or perhaps both, and whatever they decide must be the law of the land. In this case, the law of the state. Many states will be different, many will have a different number of weeks or some will have more conservative than others, and that’s what they will be. At the end of the day, this is all about the will of the people,” Trump explained. “You must follow your heart or, in may cases, your religion or your faith. Do what’s right for your family and do what’s right for yourself […] do what’s right for our country.”

Support for Trump’s proposed approach to tackling the issue was not unanimous.

“The states’ rights only rationale today runs contrary to an American consensus that would limit late-term abortions and will age about as well as the Dred Scott decision,” said Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, a usually reliable Trump ally.

Trump also reaffirmed his support for IVF procedures after a controversial Alabama court ruling.

Polling consistently finds Americans somewhere in the middle on the mother of all social issues with strong majorities opposing a total ban on abortion but also in favor of restrictions on late term abortions.
