This N.J. Congresswoman co-sponsored legislation to remove Trump’s Secret Service protection

Bonnie Watson Coleman didn’t say anything different than anyone else after the dramatic attempted assassination of Donald Trump almost two weeks ago, Save Jerseyans.

“I’m relieved that former President Trump is safe and I commend law enforcement and Secret Service agents for their swift and courageous actions,” the New Jersey 12th District congresswoman opined on social media.

Uncontroversial, right? But context is everything, and if it had been left up to Bonnie and her allies in the U.S. House? Donald Trump wouldn’t have had any Secret Service agents on site in Butler to provide “swift and courageous actions” in his defense.

Back in April (2024), Watson Coleman added her name as a co-sponsor to H.R. 8081 which would terminate Secret Service protection for “any person upon sentencing following conviction for a Federal or State offense that is punishable for a term of imprisonment of at least one year.”

The clear target of this punitive partisan legislation was and is Donald Trump, and the authorized protection eliminated by the proposed code revisions would impact not only former American presidents and their spouses but also “[m]ajor Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates and, within 120 days of the general Presidential election, the spouses of such candidates.

Watson Coleman’s bill was referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary where it won’t move for as long as Republican maintain their weak albeit real control of the chamber.

An added note of irony (and hypocrisy): as Watson Coleman talks out both sides of her mouth concerning President Trump’s safety in the face of gun violence, regular readers of this website may recall that Watson Coleman’s sons were sentenced for armed robbery at a Kids R Us in 2001.

Just don’t expect anyone in the media (aside from yours truly) to call her out for it, or ask her about it, or question her role in fomenting the divisions which lead to political violence.
