Van Drew demands a hearing on spiking South Jersey electric bills

Recently approved rate increases by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) back in February were sold as “modest” impact events by the regulatory body.

“The average bill is based, in part, upon the results from the last three BGS auctions. As a result, in 2024, BGS ratepayers will experience a moderate increase in energy costs,” said Christine Guhl-Sadovy, President of the NJBPU, back in February 2024. “Our primary goal remains to do what is in the best interest of ratepayers across New Jersey.”

When the BPU sold its rate increases, they said an average bill ($154.28) would only increase by $7.34 to $161.62, 4.8% bump. But many residents have seen much steeper hikes.

What’s happened since has been anything but modest. Some residents recently told ABC News that their bills have doubled or event trippled.

On Monday, Congressman Van Drew (R, NJ-02) wrote to the BPU and demanded a public hearing into exploding bottom lines on his constituents’ electric bills this summer.

“I have heard from thousands of constituents across the district who have seen their energy bills skyrocket compared to last year with no explanation as to why,” said Congressman Van Drew. “We must get to the bottom of what is driving these unreasonable increases, whether it is linked to offshore wind turbines, smart meter installations, or something else entirely. There needs to be a thorough investigation with a public hearing, and until we have answers, any energy hikes should be immediately halted. South Jerseyans should not be forced to shoulder this additional burden, especially at a time when record-high inflation is already straining household budgets under this administration. I demand the NJBPU take immediate action to alleviate this strain and protect our residents from these unjust financial burdens.”
