South Jersey got redder on Tuesday.
Congressman Jeff Van Drew, a former Democrat-turned-Trump ally, won a landslide victory over challenger Joe Salerno in the 2nd Congressional District.
The Republican led in his sprawling district by 58.4% to 40.9% with 84% of precincts reporting. For the first time, President Trump also appeared on track to carry every county inside his friend’s district. Trump had rallied here (in Wildwood) back in May with a widely-covered beach event.
“The people of South Jersey sent a loud, clear, and decisive message tonight that we want a safer, stronger, and more affordable America,” said Van Drew Campaign Manager Ron Filan in a released statement. “Congressman Van Drew will continue to lead the fight to stop the industrialization of our coastline, hold our utility companies’ feet to the fire, and get back to putting the United States of America and our people first.”
Congressmen Tom Kean Jr. (R, NJ-07) and Chris Smith (R, NJ-04) were also reelected on Tuesday, so the entire GOP federal delegation from the Garden State will return to D.C. in January.
