Victory, Save Jerseyans!
One of newly-minted President Trump’s first executive orders signed on Monday institutes a moratorium on offshore wind development. Specifically, the president is freezing new or renewed leasing on the outer continental shelf.
“Nothing in this withdrawal affects rights under existing leases in the withdrawn areas,” the executive order explains. “With respect to such existing leases, the Secretary of the Interior, in consultation with the Attorney General as needed, shall conduct a comprehensive review of the ecological, economic, and environmental necessity of terminating or amending any existing wind energy leases, identifying any legal bases for such removal, and submit a report with recommendations to the President, through the Assistant to the President for Economic Policy.”
President Trump was expected to sign as many as 200 executive orders on his first day as president, impacting border security and restoring U.S. energy independence as well as rolling back DEI and other woke practices inside the federal sphere of influence including the military.
Offshore wind was already on the ropes before Monday’s executive action due to a combination of ecomonic headwinds (pun intended) and legal campaigns employed by opponents. Scores of marine mammals deaths likely tied to sonar mapping for wind farms has also galvanized public opinion against offshore wind development particularly along the Jersey Shore’s coastline. Orsted’s Ocean Wind project came crashing down on Halloween 2023 when the company announced its plan to abandon the planned turbines for the waters to Cape May County, New Jersey.
Pleading to undo many of the Biden Administration’s worst excesses, President Trump signed multiple executive orders in full view of the crowd that came to watch an indoor inaugural parade at D.C.’s professional hockey arena.
