How can anyone at Rutgers-Eagleton print this crap with a straight face? Seriously?
But it’s bad news for the Democrats no matter how you slice it…
The notoriously inaccurate polling institution is out with new survey results today showing Democrat Mikie Sherrill leading Republican Jack Ciattarelli by 9 points (44% to 35%) in the 2025 New Jersey gubernatorial race. That single-digit margin represents an inexplicable gain of 11-points for Ciattarelli from Eagleton’s mid-June poll when he allegedly trailed by 20 points (51% to 31%).
You read that correctly: 11 points in two months!
“How” is a reasonable question. There hasn’t been a debate. Neither candidate is up on network television (yet). There hasn’t been any major events or changed variables – other than insanely high summer utility bills? – which came into play since the spring to explain a double-digit movement in the numbers. The only logical conclusion: Rutgers-Eagleton knew their June numbers were bullshit, they were appropriately ridiculed, so here come a “herding” survey designed to save face; for example FDU dropped a poll in the interim showing Ciattarelli behind by 8-points.
Both candidates maintain solid leads among their respective bases in Eagleton’s survey, but Sherrill maintains a statistically insignificant lead (33% to 32%) among unaffiliated voters while 29% remain undecided. New Jersey Democrats maintain a greatly reduced but nevertheless large 800,000+ statewide registration edge requiring Republican candidates to peel off independent and Democrat support to make the math add up.
“Independents are always a key voting bloc here in New Jersey,” explained Ashley Koning, the RU-Eagleton polling director. “Despite recent Republican registration gains, Ciattarelli still needs a substantial share of independents to win in November. Likewise, Sherrill must hold her edge with independents across key areas to cushion against any softness in base turnout.”

I will say this, Save Jerseyans:
While you can’t trust Eagleton numbers, I wouldn’t be shocked if the double-to-triple digit increases New Jerseyans are seeing in their electric bills this summer are helping the GOP candidate…
