This is peak New Jersey political bullshit, Save Jerseyans!
According to David Wildstein over at the NJ Globe, a minuscule 45 teenagers aged 16 or 17 cast ballots in this week’s poorly attended Newark school board elections (turnout barely cracked 3% overal). But that’s not the wildest part; according to David, the state spent $1 million to upgrade its voter registration system in order to allow these kids to vote!
Newark already receives more state aid than any other municipality in the state.
“The questionable legality (due to constitutional conflict) aside, who thinks it’s a good idea for children—who cannot be legally held to a contract—to have a say in where a total $1.6B budget goes?” opined Assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia (R-24) on X. “Kids can’t sign a binding contract, take out a loan or mortgage, or enter most legal agreements without a parent or guardian.”
Agreed.
To review:
Yes, I’m happy Newark’s experiment with using students to check their parents’ votes is over.
No, I’m fairly certain I’d rather have that $1 million back.
