Homan visits Newark facility, warns Sherrill that Delaney Hall “isn’t going anywhere”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, says claims of a hunger strike and poor conditions at the Delaney Hall immigration detention facility in Newark are unfounded following a surprise inspection he conducted over the weekend.

Speaking about the visit on Fox News, Homan said he personally entered the facility’s cafeteria and ate the same meal being served to detainees in an effort to verify allegations regarding food quality and treatment.

“I made sure my tray equaled their tray,” Homan said, describing a meal that included spaghetti with meat sauce, beans, green beans, bread, beverages, and dessert. “The food was good.”

Homan also disputed reports that detainees were refusing meals as part of a hunger strike. According to him, officials determined that detainees were continuing to purchase food from the commissary and eat in their cells.

“It’s all a false premise. There was never a hunger strike,” Homan said. “I found out they’re ordering food from the commissary and eating in their cells.”

The comments come amid ongoing controversy surrounding the use of Delaney Hall as a federal immigration detention center. The facility has been the focus of protests and criticism from immigration activists and some elected officials, who have raised concerns about conditions inside the center and the federal government’s detention policies.

Homan, however, indicated the administration remains committed to operating the facility and expanding immigration enforcement efforts.

“That facility isn’t going anywhere,” he said. “We’re going to enforce the law. We’re going to detain people.”

Federal officials have not announced any changes to operations at Delaney Hall following Homan’s visit.
