There she goes again, Save Jerseyans! By touting her administration’s efforts to “protect SNAP benefits,” Governor Mikie Sherrill is telling only part of the story.
In a recent post on X, Sherrill blamed the Trump administration for “slashing nutrition programs that families rely on” while claiming New Jersey has protected SNAP benefits and expanded food assistance.
The problem? The governor ignores why New Jersey taxpayers may soon be on the hook for millions of dollars in new SNAP costs.
We recently explained what was coming here at SaveJersey.com. Congress’s 2025 reforms didn’t simply change federal nutrition spending. They also created a new accountability system requiring states with persistently high SNAP payment-error rates to begin sharing in the cost of benefits starting in fiscal year 2028.
New Jersey is currently projected to be one of those states.
The Garden State’s estimated SNAP payment-error rate is 6.9%, above the new 6% federal threshold. If that doesn’t improve, New Jersey taxpayers could face an estimated $97 million annual bill to help cover SNAP benefits.
That isn’t the result of Washington “slashing” benefits. It’s the result of Congress requiring states to bear some financial responsibility when their programs are plagued by excessive payment errors.
Critics also correctly point to New Jersey’s continued use of Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility (BBCE), a policy that allows some households to qualify for SNAP through limited TANF-related services rather than traditional federal income and asset standards. Opponents argue the policy expands eligibility beyond Congress’s original intent while increasing the risk of payment errors.
None of that context appeared in the governor’s post. Of course!
Claiming her administration has “protected SNAP benefits” glosses over the state’s own administrative decisions that could soon cost taxpayers nearly $100 million every year.
The debate isn’t simply about federal cuts versus state generosity. It’s also about whether Trenton is responsibly administering one of the nation’s largest welfare programs—or leaving New Jersey families to foot the bill for preventable errors.
