Cardinale endorses Lonegan in NJ-05

Sen. Cardinale campaigns for then-Chairman Bob Yudin in 2012, a race in which McCann was also a candidate.

HACKENSACK, NJ — State Senator Gerry Cardinale (R-39) has endorsed former Bogota Mayor and perennial candidate for higher office Steve Lonegan in the developing primary contest for New Jersey’s Fifth Congressional District.

“Steve Lonegan has been a tireless champion of the Republican Party when no one else would step forward to take on the tough battles,” said Senator Cardinal. “I’m pleased to be the first state legislator to announce my support for his campaign.”

“Prior to 2016, North Jersey had not elected a Democrat congressman since the Depression,” added Cardinale. “To defeat the incumbent, we need a candidate who is committed to the principles of the Republican Party, courageous in campaigning, and battle-tested. Not only is Steve Lonegan the only candidate in North Jersey who fulfills those criteria, his opponent, John McCann, comes up woefully short.”

Cardinale’s endorsement was revealed 48-hours after former Cresskill Councilman John McCann launched his own bid for Democrat Josh Gottheimer’s NJ-05 seat, flanked by a healthy sampling of North Jersey Republican leaders, and took a thinly-veiled shot at Lonegan.

Lonegan and McCann are likely to face another front in Warren County where Freeholder Jason Sarnowski is also expected to seek the GOP nomination for the right to reclaim the seat Scott Garrett lost in 2016.
