Van Drew passes on U.S. Senate run

Jeff Van Drew (R, NJ-02) is passing on a U.S. Senate bid.

“I’m humbled that so many of you have asked me to run for the United States Senate,” Van Drew explained in a campaign video released on Friday morning. “For a guy from Dennis Township, it’s pretty special to be asked to run for one of the highest offices in our land. But it’s these same South Jersey values that tell me this: Do the job in Congress you were sent to do. Because God help us, there’s a lot of work in front of us.”

The announcement video can be viewed here.

Congressman Van Drew’s decision leaves a relatively wide-open primary field for the GOP nomination; Tammy Murphy, wife of the governor, is the frontrunner on the Democrat side.
