Seasonal memorial erected in Ocean City for dead whales

It’s the season of giving, Save Jerseyans, but also remembering. This year, opponents of offshore wind have decided to erect a Christmas-themed memorial in Ocean City for marine mammals who’ve paid the ultimate price for Phil Murphy’s “green” energy ambitions.

Here are the details from Save the East Coast:

The Ocean City and surrounding community is invited to join together for a tree decorating and lighting ceremony on the 9th Street beach in OCNJ, honoring the whales, dolphins, and other marine life that have died since December 2022 due to offshore wind development.

The event will take place on December 9th at 2pm and will offer a space for reflection, remembrance, and community spirit. Participants can bring their own shell, or whale or sea life themed ornaments with which to decorate the tree, or they can choose to decorate a clam shell at the event. We will enjoy cookies and hot chocolate, sing Christmas carols, and illuminate the tree as a symbol of remembrance and hope.

Organized by Kathleen Harper and Nancy Hutchinson this family-friendly event is a way for us to come together as a community to honor the whales we have lost and to celebrate the holidays.

The tree will be lit at sunset. The event will open with prayer and conclude with the singing of “Silent Night” and a candelight vigil. Join us as we honor the whales and dolphins whose lives were lost, and embrace the holiday season with hope and community. We look forward to seeing you there!
